Moving Mayfield Forward Newsletter - Summer Recap 2026
Sep 03, 2026
Family, friends, and neighbors . . .
It has been an active and exciting summer. Between spending time with family, friends and being involved in our community, I’ve had many opportunities to listen, learn, and work with educators, business owners, developers, community leaders, and citizens about how we can move Mayfield forward.
As we head into fall, school is back, sports have kicked off, and the mayoral race is here. My commitment remains the same: economic development, youth development, and community building. Leadership requires being present, listening to our community, and turning conversations into action. You cannot move a city forward by sitting on the sideline.
Summer Recap
June — Building Connections
June was filled with opportunities to connect with community and regional leaders.
I attended the Education Excellence Lunch Blender and Power in Partnership, where education, business, industry, and community leaders discussed workforce development, educational opportunities, and ways to better prepare our students for the future.
I also joined city council, community leaders, GCED, and Chamber representatives for a trip to Hopkinsville to meet with developers, community leaders and local officials to discuss downtown development and incentive programs.
Economic development remains a primary focus because work, wages, and wealth build strong communities. Discussions at the Graves County Economic Development Skybox Partner Luncheon focused on population growth, jobs, housing, and quality of life.
June was also about celebrating our community. Congratulations to Bouncin’ Budz Inflatables LLC and shout out to Independence Bank for 10 years of service in Mayfield. Thank you for your service and support in the community.
One of the month's highlights was helping coordinate the Juneteenth/Father’s Day weekend with events at Dunbar Park, Eddie Williams Park, and the Catalyst Center. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, participated, and helped bring our community together. View more details about June
July — Investing in Our Future
In July, I continued working with community partners and WKCTC to increase awareness of career pathways, dual-credit opportunities, scholarships, and training programs for our students.
I also visited the PACE program in Marshall County. I learned more about the services available to support seniors, including medical, therapy, transportation, and daily support services. I learned about the services available to support seniors in the Mayfield community.
Education remains a focus as I attended the KASA Annual Leadership Institute, connecting with education leaders from across Kentucky. I also attended the Farm to Table event at WK&T, celebrating the farmers, agricultural producers, and agribusiness leaders who are vital to our community.
We also celebrated an important improvement at the Mayfield-Graves County ballpark with the installation of new lights. Thank you to the Parks and Recreation Board, Ballpark board, WKRECC, MEWS, businesses, community leaders, and everyone who helped make this possible. Improvements like this benefit our youth, families, and our community. View more details about July
August — Preparing for the Future
I attended Donuts & Democracy and was honored to welcome the guests at the event before going to the Fancy Farm Picnic. I was proud to serve on the Graves County Pioneer Award Committee. Congratulations to Blake Kendall, this year's Pioneer Award recipient, for his contributions to Mayfield, Graves County. We were honored to recognize Blake at the Fancy Farm Picnic.
On the economic development front, I met with our state representative, commissioners, city council members, investors, and developers to discuss upcoming projects, development opportunities, and areas of needed improvement.
We must be forward-thinking and prepare Mayfield for the next 50 years.
Investing in Our Youth
Youth development remains one of my priorities.
I serve as the School/Home/Community Liaison for Mayfield Independent School District. I’m the head coach of Mayfield Middle School football, and I serve as the Athletic Director for middle school sports.
If I’m elected mayor, I will discontinue my role as Athletic Director of the middle school as well as head coach of middle school football. I will continue in my role as the School/Home/Community Liaison because our kids will always be my priority. They are the future! Removing barriers to success and ensuring our students and their families have the resources to be successful should be a priority of your mayor. You will notice, I do not take days off or breaks! I’m in the community, I’m serving on boards, I’m showing up and following through for Mayfield!
The Power of Partnership
Strong communities are built through strong partnerships. Throughout the summer, I have met with educators, businesses, developers, elected officials, organizations, and citizens. Whether the conversation involves education, workforce development, business recruitment, housing, youth programs, infrastructure, or quality of life, the goal is the same:
Find ways to make Mayfield better for the people who live here today and for the generations who will follow.
Go be great!
Let’s move Mayfield forward—together.
With gratitude,
Derrick Parrott
